Olympic Athletes: Eat to Win

With the 2012 London Olympics in full-swing and being a great fan of the “Games”, I thought it may be interesting to note some key athletes and what they eat to win!

Consuming nearly 8,000 – 10,000 calories per day, Michael Phelps may soon be the most decorated Olympic athlete of all time.  His typical breakfast consists of "...three sandwiches of fried eggs, cheese, lettuce, tomato, fried onions and mayonnaise, add one omelet, a bowl of grits, and three slices of French toast with powdered sugar, then wash down with three chocolate chip pancakes.”  (SimononSports reporting on a Bob Costas interview). 

Ashton Eaton will make his Olympic debut in London, competing in the decathlon, aiming to be known as the Best Athlete on Earth, as many experts feel decathletes are the greatest all-around athlete in the world.  For lunch, he’s a fan of tuna melts on whole-wheat bread.  But, he sometimes supplements his midday meal with SOUP!  For dinner, he “rotates fish, chicken, or some kind of red meat and a salad or asparagus or green beans."  From an article on what Olympic athletes Eat to Win, many agree with Eaton’s focus on protein.  “To stay in tip-top shape and maintain their energy during long workout sessions, these strong competitors need constant fuel. One thing they all agree is key to their conditioning: protein. Peanut butter seems to be the favorite source.”
