Fundraising to Fill the "Empty Bowls"

About a week ago, I had the utmost pleasure to attend the Empty Bowls fundraiser at Battle Mountain High School in Edwards, Colorado. This luncheon raises funds for the Vail Valley Salvation Army, where a fourth of the annual budget restocks food pantries and provides food assistance throughout the Valley.

Opulent Luxury at Omni Mount Washington

The Omni Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire was a glorious location for the Ski Town Soups: Meet the Author event on Sunday, June 23. If the Gasparilla Inn in Boca Grande, Florida and the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado merged into one resort, with a little influence from the Brown Palace Hotel in Denver, Colorado, one would glimpse the feeling of the Omni Mount Washington, yet on a much more grandiose scale, to say the least.

Fluttering into town on a flurry of snowflakes, I was thus welcomed to Steamboat Springs ... aka, Ski Town USA!  I meandered along Lincoln Avenue picking up issues of Steamboat Today, in which Ski Town Soups was featured.  I also stopped into Elevated Olive of Steamboat, and met co-owners Carol and June.

Park City Soup Crawl

The hours prior to the "Park City Soup Crawl" unveiling were not uneventful!  Chelsea Haviland Miskin of the Park City TV's Mountain Morning Show hosted Ski Town Soups and me for a sit-down chat, pictured below.  We talked traveling, inspiration, and recipes ... I believe I made her and her co-host, Joe Davis, very hungry with the mouth-watering soup recipes from the book.

A Soup-er School Day

Today, Ski Town Soups participated in a fundraising event at Red Sandstone Elementary School, Vail’s public elementary school.  This was an incredible way to kick-off cooking with young ones and teaching them to make soup (an extremely forgiving course).  With the help of 50 kindergarteners and parents/teachers, we cooked 6 crockpots full of soup.

Vail Valley Foundation's Sowing Seeds Program gets Healthy

The Vail Valley Foundation, founded in 1981, has an outstanding goal – give all children in Eagle County access to education-based programs that ignite passions and expand their horizons.  The foundation identifies gaps and develops, evaluates and funds programs to fulfill youth’s needs.  One of these programs, co-founded by Chef Kelly Liken, is Sowing Seeds (est. 2010).
